1st day at Wonderspace

Today was a wonderful experience because we learned how to make a computer game. We loved picking out sounds for when the ball hit the bricks, sides, and the players paddle. It was amazing when we tested our game because we felt good to know that we could make a computer game . We also enjoyed how we could make the bricks disappear as the ball hit them. That is why today was a wonderful day.

VEX robotics

Upgraded the VEX( a metal robot with a controller) to a super battle bot(it has a tipper on the side and a shearer on the other side, i also added a stabber and a poker on the front and back.) and then I watched Matthew(a friend in my class) play a little bit of Half Life.

owens roxing day

I had a great time today learning about fps creator and computers. My counselor is so awesome he lets us play games and teaches us allot I'm also working on a awesome ww2 game. we make different levels and multiplayer maps so us and are friends can play together using fps creator

Wonder Space is Great!

My stay at Wonder Space this summer has been some of the most fun I have ever had. Wonder Space has been a great place for me to learn about modern technology and create anything you want! I highly recommend this camp for anyone who wants to create games instead of play them over the summer!

Reed's Blog

  1. Today at camp (I am in Game Design B) I did many things. I helped others use Multi-media Fusion 2, edited my game and watched the dissection of a computer. I had a lot of fun. I transfered my files to another computer because the one I was using was very slow.

Robotics day 3

By now you may have learned how to program the robot. With mind storm you would have learned how to make something happen when something else happens( making it say hello when you say something) And for VEX you would have learned how to control the robot. The consoler is really helpful. Your allowed to bring your robot from home, if you have one. You can play a P.C. game on the computer during lunch(12 to 1)and they have seminar at 3.

Clay Blog

My name is Clay and I am taking Web Design at Wonder-Space. I was working on my flash games until lunch then I played HL2. There really is not to much to a website except script. That is why we were working on flash games. My website will be up at the end of this week.

How to Pick a Quality Computer

Hi, I'm Patrick, one of the members of this years Build a Computer class, and this is my guide to buying a quality computer that will not let you down in speed, capacity, power, and overall performance. Here are the steps:

1. Buy a Mac (What now, Cheney?)

If your intellect is below par, however, and you suffer separation anxiety from your beloved Windows OS, then the following guide will help you (because I guarantee you, if you use PCs, you do need a terrible amount of help) select the best PC you possibly can, which, I'm afraid, will still be horrible when compared to macs sheer elegance and simplicity of a Mac. These are the following categories one should look into when buying their "ideal PC"(despite the fact that PCs are far from ideal).
-Hard Disk Drive
The Hard Disk drive is an essential part of the PC. It stores the operating system, files, and virtually all memory that helps the PC run the way it does. Although the amount of memory in the hard disk drive is important, the amount of pins, and thus the speed, is of equal, if not more importance than the capacity. Look for the speed of the drive and the Capacity.
-Microprocessor
If the Microprocessor is the brain of the computer, than the saying "Two heads are better than one" rings true. Intel's Core Duo processor is a best buy for power and compatibility. Because it has a dual core, it acts as two processors, therefore allowing a dual core processor with a low speed to have a higher performance than a single core processor with a slightly faster speed. e.g.: The Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8300, with a clock speed of 2.40 GHz is more powerful than a single core processor with a clock speed of 3 GHz. Look for the Dual Core.
-Graphics card
It doesn't matter how fast the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is if it has no place to store the images it creates. That is why when buying a good graphics card, Look for on-board Memory. (Also, look for quality, not quantity- one good, powerful graphics card is better than three weak ones)
-Ram
As with the Hard Drive, it does not matter how much information you can store if you cannot access it quickly. Look for Speed And Capacity.
-Disk Drive
Speed is also imporatant for the disk drive, but as for the model, the different types are not too important. As long as you find a good drive that can read and write disks, you're fine. If you want to go the extra mile, however, Find one that plays DVD and CD.
-Ports
Buy the most standardized ports (e.g. USB, Ethernet, etc.)
-OS
The different operating systems are designed for different usages, and depending on the work you want to pursue, research the pros and cons of each OS, Then decide. Some examples are Mac OS X, Windows Vista/XP, and Linux.

Modding Half-Life 2

My name is Stefan D. and this is my second summer at Wonder-Space. Today, I have been working on my custom-built levels for Half-Life 2. I added more rooms to a map I've been working on since the start of the week. I also made another map which consists of a small, breakable house over a lake of radioactive waste. Of course, we also spent plenty of time play-testing each other's maps. Here are a couple screen shots. Enjoy!

I'm in the Digital Video and Special Effects class and it has been great so far. On Monday, our class came up with and developed some story ideas for our film. We also learned about story arcs and the different components of the story. On Tuesday, we learned about storyboarding and broke into smaller groups to storyboard seperate chunks of the movie. After this we learned how to write scripts and scripted our movie. Today, Wednesday, we spent most of the morning shooting our movie. We finished shooting and started editing our footage with the editing software called Vegas. I'm pretty excited for tomorrow when we will add in special effects. I'm looking forward to the rest of the week and to more WS camps in the future!

Java

Wonder-Space has been awesome,
I've done so many things here over the past few years.
This is my last week this year but I plan on coming next year.
This year I took a week of robotics and 2 weeks of Java.
The program below is the result of the second week of Java.
It is used to code and decode ciphers.
You enter a key word and a phrase that you want coded, then you press code.
you need the key word to decode the message.
Cipher%20code%201.5.zip

I've had a lot of fun at Wonder-Space and look forward to more fun in the future.
-Sam (camper)

Wonder-Space camp has been a very fun experience. I have done it since 2002 at least once a year. It is very fun for children who love to use their imaginations and to create things. The programming course has been based on a program called Java. Java is hard to use, but it is really cool once you get the hang of it. You can use it to create many different programs that do many different things. Programming teaches you the language of the computer and things that it can do.

Digital Video & Special Effects

Hey guys, my name is Joe and I'm a counselor at Wonder-Space. I'm majoring in film at Rice University and will be a sophomore in the fall.
This week I'm teaching the Digital Video and Design Class. So far the class has brainstormed possible genres for their movie, and from that developed a plot and storyline. Today they created storyboards to decide what camera angles they will use in the film, and then used the storyboards to plan out the actual script for the movie. Then after a quick introduction to different lighting methods and the importance of sound and music in a film, they cast the different roles in the script, rehearsed it and managed to film 2 scenes before running out of time. Tomorrow we will be filming all day to finish the movie, after which we will start the editing process.
I've posted below a short clip of the class in action and some pictures taken during the day. Enjoy!

Clayton's Multimedia Adventures Blog

Monday:
I searched Google for pictures for my website. I also edited pictures on Photoshop. In the afternoon, I learned how to make movies in Flash.
Tuesday:
I edited more pictures in Photoshop. I made more Flash movies. I loaded movies onto the computer from my video camera. I played a typing game called Typing Tutor. I created a website using HTML and Dreamweaver. I loaded my Flash movies onto my website. I learned how to make a game in Multimedia Fusion 2.
Wednesday:
I made two games in Multimedia Fusion 2. I edited some pictures on Photoshop and used them in a Flash video. I played more of the typing game.
Thursday:
I created more webpages for my site and linked them to a homepage I created. I made more changes to one of my computer games.
